GUILDERLAND, NY — The federal Environmental Protection Agency has fined Macy's department  stores $50,000 for throwing out fluorescent light bulbs in the regular trash, according to the Albany Times Union.

The fluorescent bulbs contain mercury, which must be treated as a toxic waste and recycled, the story stated.

The violations involved an undisclosed number of illegally discarded light bulbs at stores in Guilderland and Garden City, Long Island, the story noted.

A Macy's spokesman said the company has started a nationwide training program to ensure that mercury-based bulbs are properly recycled, the story added.
